Capitol Clutch
& Brake, Inc. (CCB) was founded in the 1940's in downtown Sacramento,
CA. In the mid-1960's, the company operated out of a small, dark building
(about 4000 sq. ft.) on 'S' Street, with about six employees. At that
time, CCB handled primarily light-duty automotive products, and focused
it's machine shop efforts on passenger car brake shoes and drums. CCB
was purchased in 1966 by Grady Mathews, who moved his family from the
San Francisco Bay Area to Sacramento. Grady's background was in heavy-duty
friction components for trucks, busses, and off-road equipment, having
worked in sales for the S.K. Wellman Company from 1955 to 1966. The focus
at CCB changed accordingly, and gradually the inventory and sales efforts
shifted towards heavy duty vehicle parts. After a few rough years getting
started, the business began to grow in earnest in 1970. In 1972, Grady's
son Vince joined the business as a delivery driver while still in high
school. Hollis McNatt joined the company in 1973 as a machinist.
